I Did Not Know... I did not know that my neighbors visit local food pantries. I did not know that the food pantry was having difficulty staying stocked. I did not know that the food pantries are supported by the food banks which are funded by the Walk For Hunger and private donations. I did not know that some food pantries depend entirely on private donations. I did not know that private donations were down. I did not know that it is mostly mothers and small children as well as the elderly who visit the food pantries. I did not know that the food pantry supports about 160 people a week in my town. I did not know that the food pantry in some towns also supply clothing. I did not know that my neighbors get in line an hour or two before the doors open so they can get the best choices of food. I did not know that at some food pantries there is milk and eggs and ground turkey not just non-perishable food items like soup, peanut butter, cereal and macaroni and cheese. I did not know that every family member who qualifies gets a bag of food that lasts for three days. I did not know that you can only visit once or twice a month. I did not know that food pantries are run by volunteers. I did not know... But now I do... And so do you... What's in your pocket? A loaf of bread, a gallon of milk?
